Marcasse Nature Reserve Nature Reserve and surroundings

Nature Reserve and surroundings Marcasse located on Wasmes (Colfontaine), covers 11.5 hectares of protected area made up almost entirely by the heap of Mark and a moor near to it, resulting from exploitation of a heap in the 80s. Ultimately, this reservation should be extended to other neighboring heaps. Agreements with landowners in this direction have already been taken.

The biodiversity of the reserve is remarkable. Habitat diversity is indeed important and allows you to find wildlife and a very interesting flora.
because you can observe woodlands, slopes mobile dense beech forests, beech forests clear summital shaven lawns, large open areas of heath type, natural ponds ... All on a little more than 11 ha ...

As stated above, this diversity of backgrounds allows the implementation of a remarkable procession of flora and fauna for Borinage.
Among wildlife, there are many forest birds (tawny owl, the long-eared owl, birds ...), different peaks of open circles (the Stonechat, the grasshopper warbler, the rousserole ferverole ...), the blue-winged grasshopper, the natterjack toad, etc..
Among the flora are: the dwarf cotton, the sandwort leaved thyme, fireweed to lanceolate, the inula Conyza the Leontodon changing the carline, etc..

But the vast richness of this subject stems from its position on the outskirts of a densely populated and built. This heap contributes fully to the mesh and forms a green oasis of nature amid the region of Mons-Borinage.
addition, slag heaps are an important part of social and cultural identity of the inhabitants of this region. Reserve therefore also to protect this element of our identity.

The main purpose of the reserve is of course the preservation of biodiversity. For this kind of sites are held regularly (every first Saturday of the month). Cleaning operations and program records of plant and animal has also been established.
The Committee also works to raise awareness about the protection of nature and environment of the local population. To do tours, educational projects, demonstrations and other activities are implemented in collaboration with several local partners.
